Knives in the Dark by Cerque Knives in the Dark by Cerque
A Certain Scene from a certain book. ;-) If you have not read all of the books, turn away now, because the comments may spoil it for you.

Many of the faces are based off faces of friends of mine, including my own face. :P

Work in Progress! I am open to artistic suggestions from fellow fans on how to make it as good a portrayal of what was in the books.

Some music from Ramin Djawadi

I don't. He was too forward thinking for the older members of the NW IMO.

I thought it was because he wanted to march in the name of his family.

oh man, Knives in the Dark is a chapter in "The Fellowship", LotR by Tolkien, too... I sat here for like 2 minutes pondering your picture and not getting "it".

But of course, I should have realized that YOU would not draw the ring wraths but a scene out of GoT :D

nice one. jon stands out. the rest is a blur, so far... don't quite remember the chapter, see.

Wait wait... where's the bleeding star and Wun wun?
otherwise it's absolutely gorgeous.

Wun Wun's there! Just in the distance. Reading the book, I imagined the large gathering of Night's watchmen keeping their distance from Wun Wun.

I love this illustrative style... but how did you make the background? It almost looks like some frottage technique...

Hi there! I am not entirely sure what frottage is(never studied art in school) so i'm a bit ignorant to how it's actually supposed to be done, but for that backround( the big ice wall behind everything that is going on) I first of all wet all of the canvas where i wanted the wall to be by pouring water all over it, then I started getting black paint and drawing horizontal lines, this meant that the black bled into the water and made everything quite floaty. then i highlighted areas with white, I did this over and over. Then when everything was dey, I decided I wanted some verticality, so I started drawing vertical lines over the paint with a heavy pencil and rubbing the pencil marks to spread it. after all that I got some white paint and thinned it out with water and painted over the entire thing with the thinned out white paint to give, almost, a translucent/ icy look to the wall. And the final layer is just spaltters of white paint for the snow! Hope that made sense! :P

It's a really cool layering effect. It has something both 3-dimensional (that's why I thought of frottage first) and organic about it, I can't really explain it.

Thank you! I am delighted you like the tone of it! Shows how good George is at making a scene, if we all felt something very similar. :)

You didn't see it's "wip"?

Yeah I am making a few a few adjustments as I type this to the painting. I like keeping a sense of chaos as well though, and that means a little confusion. Also, its about keeping it so that Jon isn't fully recognisable for people who have not read the books, but people that have read the books know what's going on.

i know the scene but its kind of hard to see whats going on in the center where jon is... is there any way you could lighten it a bit or somehow contrast him to make him stand out since the scene is centered on him?

I could try messing around with it a bit. As I mentioned in the opening post, It is a work in progress. I felt the scene was just as much about the men of the Night's watch as it was about Jon, the ones that support him and the ones that do not. I do agree with you though, I will try making Jon stand out a bit more and update it when I do ;)

Look again, hes to the left in the distance standing beside the armoury. He is about 12 feet in height so he isn't that tall, but as I imagined them standing quite a bit back from Wun Wun because of Wun Wun's disposition at that time.
